How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

SafetyFire & Gas

A fire extinguisher is an important safety device for your home. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher correctly can effectively control a fire in its early stages and protect yourself and your family. This guide will detail the steps for using a fire extinguisher, helping you respond correctly in an emergency.

Warning

  • Use the fire extinguisher only after confirming the fire source is safe to approach. If the fire is too large or spreading rapidly, evacuate immediately and call the fire department at 911 (or your local emergency number). Do not risk your life to extinguish the fire; safety comes first!

  • Before using, always check that the fire extinguisher is within its expiration date and that the pressure gauge needle is in the green zone. Expired or under-pressurized extinguishers may not function properly.

  • When using a dry powder fire extinguisher, be sure to stand upwind to avoid inhaling the powder. After extinguishing the fire, ventilate the area to reduce powder residue.

The following steps apply to common dry powder fire extinguishers. Other types of extinguishers may have slightly different usage methods. Please read the instructions on the extinguisher carefully before use.
